Nestled along the scenic banks of the Amite River in French Settlement, Louisiana, Boondocks Bar and Grill stands as a beloved local landmark that masterfully combines rich history with a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. This bar & grill embodies the laid-back charm of river life, making it a destination where locals and visitors alike gather to unwind, indulge, and connect.
Stepping into Boondocks, you're immediately embraced by its friendly, casual vibe—a place where the clinking of glasses harmonizes with the laughter of friends and the occasional tune from live music. The outdoor views of the river only amplify this relaxed atmosphere, providing the perfect backdrop for an afternoon refreshment or an evening out filled with karaoke, pool, and great conversation.
Boondocks’ menu is a flavorful journey into classic American bar and grill fare with a distinctive Southern touch. Start your meal with the crispy, golden Onion Rings ($7.50), perfectly battered and fried to a satisfying crunch that pairs effortlessly with their tangy dipping sauce. For a bit of zest, the Southwest Egg Rolls ($8.00) deliver a savory surprise, blending smoky spices and fresh ingredients in each bite. Cheese Sticks ($8.00) also offer a gooey, melty indulgence that sets the stage for the main course.
When you move on to the heartier options, the Chicken Sandwich ($14.00) is a standout, boasting tender, juicy chicken paired with fresh toppings nestled in a soft bun—a simple pleasure that hits all the right notes. The Chicken Tender Basket ($12.50) brings the nostalgic comfort of perfectly fried tenderloins with your choice of dipping sauces, making it an ideal choice for sharing or savoring solo.
For wrap enthusiasts, Boondocks doesn’t disappoint. The Grilled Chicken Wrap ($13.50) is packed with smoky, grilled chicken and fresh greens, while the Steak Fajita Wrap ($15.00) offers a robust bite of tender steak infused with bold Southwestern flavors. Not to be missed, the Buffalo Ranch Chicken Wrap ($14.00) delivers a spicy, creamy kick that excites the palate and leaves you craving more.
What truly sets Boondocks Bar and Grill apart is its deep-rooted connection to the local community, with a history stretching back over 25 years and even before, when it was known as Mecca Inn—a ferry hub crossing the Amite River. This heritage infuses the place with an authenticity few establishments can match. Patrons like Jeremy Gautreau fondly recall the evolution of the venue, adding a layer of nostalgia and genuine affection to the experience.
Visitors often remark on the warmth of the staff and the inclusive, family-friendly environment. Whether you’re dropping in during LSU football games, catching live music on weekend nights, or just escaping the bustle with a refreshing shrimp taco or a cold drink after a day on the water, Boondocks promises consistently good service and memorable moments.
Boondocks Bar and Grill is far more than just a stop for food and drink—it’s a destination where history, hospitality, and hearty flavors come together to create a heartfelt experience. I am kind of partial to this place because I have a long history with the many changes that took place to this restaurant/bar in the past 25 years. In fact before it was Boonocks, Jays, or even Bordelon's restaurant, it was Mecca Inn where the ferry used to take people, cars, and animals across the Amite river. I worked under Paul Bordelon and this was my first job as a teen taking care of the boat launch (no longer available) and washing dishes. Now Boondocks, has a fun festive atmosphere the whole family can enjoy as they have a full restaurant. This place treats you like you've been there a long time. Even the customers will have you laughing in no time with a funny story and a caring hug. This place just down right treats you like family. Pool tables look good (Of course due to COVID they may closed at the moment) and the food is phenomenal as the new owners have changed the menu and are now serving, "!!HOMADE BURGERS!", and WRAPS!!, among many other added goodies with more to come, that are off the hook, chain or just D#$%# good. Along with bands on the weekends and events through the month it makes this, so called country bar, one of the best places to come and have some fun and enjoy the LIVE music or the digital juke box. The last cool thing is the long "L" shaped dock that can accommodate larger water vessels and they also have gas to keep you going on the water. Come on out to Boondocks and I may even see you there as my brother is one of the cooks there.

We went to hear the band, but unfortunately they had canceled them. But we still stayed for a bit. We enjoyed the atmosphere, we didn’t try the food yet because we had just eaten, but the other customers said the food was good. The bar tender was nice. We will hive it another try on a prettier night when they do have a band.

When you're doin your weekend boating thing on the river and hunger gets the best of you, Boondocks offers some good food and good drinks. Stop in and refresh yourself. I had the shrimp tacos and was not disappointed. I have found my go-to meal on the river.
